Utilities

Utilities. Utilities, like the Southern Company, are interested in providing the finest energy efficient technologies, financial plans, and project management for their clients.  Utilities (including utility ESCOs and DSM firms) realize geothermal energy as a tool in the energy deregulation wars.  In order to make geothermal heating and cooling systems a more attractive opinion, utilities offer DSM contracts (for business owners) and ESP contracts (for governmental agencies). Both contracts offer performance contracting and project management features to the business owner.  Typically, utilities will finance the cost difference between conventional and geothermal systems as well as any additional services the client requires (project management, lighting designs, refrigeration issues).

PEPCO’s Model Utility GeoExchange Program Pilot is targeting the military sector as a significant opportunity to increase GeoExchange installations. This project will serve as a guide for targeting the complex military market throughout the United States, as well as providing visible demonstrations of this technology to the military command, Congress, the Executive Branch, and other key governmental leaders.

Program highlights include successful installation at Patuxent NAS and the potential for several other military commitments. Key deliverables include a four-color informational military segment kit containing numerous fact sheets and case studies on the benefits of GeoExchange technology in military applications, which is being utilized by other Consortium members.

Gulf’s Model Utility GeoExchange Program Pilot is targeted at residential, commercial, and military markets. Gulf Power is promoting GeoExchange extensively through training, technical assistance, documentation of system performance in various building configurations, and public awareness materials. One program element of particular interest is the guaranteed bill concept.

Gulf’s Pilot installations are reflected in the installation numbers for The Southern Company Program. Gulf’s monitoring of energy use at the GeoExchange installation at Pensacola NAS has played a key role in convincing DOD personnel at other sites of the value of GeoExchange and expanding the project at Pensacola. Potential projects now include four military bases. In January of 1998, Gulf expanded its pilot project to include a feasibility study for a 2,500 installation at the Correy Station military base in Pensacola, Florida.

FirstEnergy’s Model Utility GeoExchange Program Pilot partners the utility with the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center (LENSC) to install a 71-ton system at the center and to produce an active and permanent GeoExchange display at the facility (including interactive video). The LENSC has over 120,000 visitors every year. The installation will raise awareness of GeoExchange technology, both among residential customers who visit the center and architects and engineers who will use the facility as a training site. Grand Opening of the LENSC is scheduled for April 4, 1998. Media and dignitary turnout is expected to be high.

Activities underway include setting up monitoring for development of a detailed case study, and designing and installing the interactive display. A short video featuring the LENSC and other local GeoExchange success stories is being produced for use in conjunction with the March 11th national GeoExchange teleconference for which FirstEnergy will host two downlink sites. FirstEnergy has helped install 102 tons of GeoExchange in residential applications and 312 tons of GeoExchange in commercial applications.

"Accelerating the Pace"

PP&L’s Model Utility GeoExchange Program Pilot is targeting the commercial sector for GeoExchange technology, including office building, nursing homes, and other applications. Program highlights include successful GeoExchange installation at key sites, including a photography studio and a state office building. Key deliverables include a 15-minute video on the advantages of GeoExchange applications for commercial installations. The video, which is distributed nationally by the GeoExchange Information Center as part of a segment kit, is being utilized in numerous regions of the country as an important tool for recruiting commercial building owners. Additional information will be available pending completion of Status Report.

"Buried Treasure Program"

PP&L’s "Buried Treasure" Model Utility GeoExchange Program Pilot is targeting the residential customer to utilize GeoExchange technology in a 100+ home development. A community loop was pre-installed in the development, leading to a significant reduction in cost for each home’s installation of a GeoExchange system. Program highlights include the successful recruitment of customers. Every home sold so far in the development will utilize a GeoExchange system. Key deliverables to date include drawings of a table top display about GeoExchange systems which targets the residential customer and a promotional plan with print ads and signage. Additional information will be available pending completion of Status Report.

Plumas Sierra REC

Plumas Sierra REC’s Model Utility GeoExchange Program Pilot targeted retrofits of GeoExchange systems in over 200 existing homes and condominiums in a recreational development. The systems were financed in large part by Plumas Sierra’s innovative loop lease program in conjunction with a new, long-term manufacturer’s equipment loan developed under EPA’s ENERGY STAR® financing program. Plumas-Sierra’s community-based public awareness effort utilized "swat teams" to spread the word and work with interested customers. Their efforts provide an important model for other utilities. A final report is expected soon to close-out the project.

Southern Company’s Model Utility GeoExchange Program Demonstration is a critical first step for the company in promoting GeoExchange in a region that has a strong electric heating presence dominated by air source and less-efficient electric resistance technologies. The region is also experiencing vigorous natural gas heating and water heating competition. The project is laying the foundation for a successful GeoExchange market mobilization program targeted at a variety of customer segments, with particular emphasis on up-scale, new residential construction, health care facilities, military installations, hotel/motels, and key regional commercial accounts.

Southern Company has committed to a very strong co-funding ratio over the entire duration of this five-year project (over 7:1); in addition to this strong contribution, Southern is also committing $1 million to provide critical infrastructure strengthening such as technician training and design assistance. GeoExchange systems totaling 665 tons have been committed and/or installed in a media center, three office buildings, four schools, and a nursing home in Georgia and Alabama. The Shelby Baptist Nursing Home opened in November 1997. These commercial installations have already pushed The Southern Company, including Gulf Power’s pilot, past its goal of 75 tons for 1997. Southern Company has in fact reached 9 times its original goal. In addition, a large residential home (65 tons) is being installed, and outreach efforts are continuing to a Habitat for Humanity development of 38 single-family homes and other key accounts.

Alabama Power Company conducted a significant outreach to local trade allies to attend the Southeastern Regional GeoExchange Conference held February 1998 in Perdido Beach, AL. Alabama Power, Oglethorpe Power Corporation, and GHPC sponsored the event that over 250 individuals attended.
