THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY TESTING

Key Benefits
Very simply, thermal conductivity testing measures the ability of the ground, at a specific site, to transfer heat. This is especially important in commercial geothermal applications, where large amounts of heat must move in and out of the ground heat exchanger. The efficiency of the heat exchanger is important in determining its size.
Most ground loop design software require the input of a value for thermal conductivity. The total ground loop calculated for a given system is heavily dependent on the chosen value for conductivity. If the thermal conductivity is "guessed" too low, many dollars may be spent on unnecessary ground loop, or the first cost may eliminate geo systems from consideration. If the thermal conductivity is "guessed" too high, the system will fail to handle the building loads, resulting in temperatures outside the design range.
